The strategic army exercise Zapad 2013
[West 2013] took place in Belarus and Russia on 20-26 September 2013. The
large-scale exercise involved over 22,000 personnel, over 530 armored vehicles,
about 90 aircraft and helicopters and up to ten ships of the Baltic Fleet. In
line with the exercise's concept an imaginary country has been penetrated by
extremist groups and illegal armed bands intent on committing terrorist attacks.
However, they faced the military forces of the allies, who demonstrated
strategic cohesiveness and tested the latest hardware. The defense exercise was
witnessed by observers from the countries that Belarus borders on and 26
military attaches from different countries. In addition to the Union State
military forces the Zapad 2013 exercise involved troops of Armenia, Kazakhstan,
Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan within the framework of the Interaction 2013
exercise of the Collective Rapid Response Forces of the Collective Security
Treaty Organization. On 26 September, the final day of the exercise presidents
of the two countries, commanders in chief of the armed forces Alexander
Lukashenko and Vladimir Putin observed what was going on in the Gozhsky firing
range in Belarus and on the Baltic coast in Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia.
