The
staff of the PIF dog shelter in Donetsk – the only large institution of this
type in the Donetsk People’s Republic – continues to help stray animals despite
the war and the economic blockade. The shelter runs off donations only.
However, this didn’t prevent the volunteers from saving about 600 dogs injured
in shelling.
As
the director of the institution Victoria Afonina told a correspondent of the
Donetsk News Agency, injured animals were taken to the shelter from various hot
spots: Yasinovataya, Debaltsevo and even the Kiev-controlled city of
Kramatorsk. Here, four-legged patients were provided with the necessary medical
assistance.
“About
500-600 injured dogs have been taken to our shelter since the beginning of the
war. There were cases when animals had their paws ripped off or suffered head
injuries. They survived by sheer luck,” – Victoria Afonina said.
According
to her, more than half of the injured dogs have already been adopted. Donetsk
volunteers find new homes for about 12-15 animals a month. In 2016 alone, about
100 dogs were adopted.
“Many
dogs are adopted by residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg. Besides, animals,
mostly disabled ones, find new homes in Germany. We keep in touch with each
family. Some of them still send us pictures of their pets. About 30 dogs were
adopted by the DPR army,” – the director of the shelter added.
The
animal shelter is located in the western part of Donetsk. About 800 dogs and 10
cats live there. The cats were taken in out of kindness, since the institution
focuses exclusively on dogs. The staff consists of 26 people. Besides, about
15-20 volunteers help them on a regular basis. A vet clinic and a training area
are located within the shelter.
Due
to the fact that the animal shelter is far from the contact line, it didn’t
suffer damage as a result of hostilities.

Since
the beginning of the war, the ‘PIF’ dog asylum in #Donetsk has rescued
some 600 homeless dogs who sustained injuries in shellings. After treatment,
more than a half of them, including those who were heavily injured, have
already found new masters.
Some 30 dogs were even “conscripted” into the military service as guards.
